The Loop That Controls Your Life
Understanding it and how to change it
This Substack is about closing the gap between knowing and doing. It's about understanding why we get in our own way, and learning the skills to act with clarity, even when we don't feel like it.
You already know what to do.
Go to bed instead of scrolling.
Train even when you don’t feel like it.
Have the hard conversation.
Follow through on what you said mattered.
You’ve thought about it.
Planned it.
Maybe even done it before.
But in the moment…
You don’t do it.
You don’t have a discipline problem.
You have a moment problem — and you keep losing it.
The Invisible Shift That Changes Everything
In the moment of decision, something subtle happens.
The question changes.
Instead of asking:
“What does the situation require?”
The mind asks:
“What about me?”
Do I feel like it?
Am I too tired?
Do I deserve a break?
Is this really worth it today?
And just like that…
The goal disappears.
And negotiation is where goals go to die.
Why This Keeps Happening
It’s not random.
It’s not lack of discipline.
It’s a loop.
The Loop That Runs Your Behavior
Every moment follows the same pattern:
1. State
You feel something:
tired
stressed
unmotivated
2. Question
Your mind interprets it:
“What about me?”
or
“What does this moment require?”
3. Action
You either:
follow through
avoid, delay, negotiate
4. Identity
You reinforce:
“I follow through”
or
“I don’t”
And then the loop repeats.
The Part Most People Get Wrong
They try to fix:
discipline
motivation
the plan
But they ignore the first step:
State
You don’t choose your state.
You condition it.
You don’t wake up and decide:
your mood
your energy
your motivation
Your state shows up.
But what you do next?
That’s where everything changes.
Two people feel the same thing:
tired
stressed
resistant
One says:
“Not today”
The other says:
“Move anyway”
Same state.
Different future.
Because:
What you do trains what shows up next time.
The Real Trap
Most people are stuck in what they call “self-awareness.”
But it’s not awareness.
It’s self-consciousness.
They’re:
overthinking
analyzing
evaluating themselves constantly
Stuck inside themselves.
The Real Distinction
Self-consciousness asks:
“What about me?”
Self-awareness asks:
“What does this moment require?”
One keeps you:
reactive
hesitant
inconsistent
The other makes you:
clear
decisive
reliable
What This Looks Like in Real Life
You’re sitting in the car outside the gym.
You could walk in.
But your mind starts:
“I didn’t sleep great”
“I’ll go tomorrow”
“I don’t feel 100%”
Now you’re thinking.
Still in the car.
Or you’re in the kitchen at night.
The plan was simple.
But now:
“One snack won’t matter”
“I had a long day”
“I’ll tighten it up tomorrow”
Again…
You’re not lacking discipline.
You’re stuck in a state…and reinforcing it.
The Uncomfortable Truth
If you can’t sit still for 10 minutes,
you don’t control your mind.
Your mind controls you.
Because without space…
You don’t get a real choice.
How to Break the Loop
You don’t break it with more thinking.
You break it by interrupting it.
1. Stillness — Create space
Pause for 10 seconds.
Slow your breathing.
Relax your shoulders.
Stop reacting.
You’re not trying to feel better.
You’re creating space to choose.
2. Release — Drop the weight
Let the state be there.
Tired.
Resistant.
Unmotivated.
You don’t need to fix it.
You just stop obeying it.
3. Courageous Action — Move anyway
Take the smallest meaningful step:
Walk into the gym.
Prep one meal.
Start the first set.
Go to bed.
You don’t need motivation.
You need movement.
4. Structure — Remove negotiation
Decide ahead of time:
Train at 6 AM.
Walk after dinner.
Lights off at 10.
When the moment comes,
you don’t decide.
You execute.
Why This Works
Because it moves you from: internal noise → clear perception
From: self-focus → directed action
The Truth Most People Miss
You don’t rise to the level of your goals.
You fall to the level of your state.
And your state isn’t chosen.
It’s trained.
Final Thought
Every moment presents the same fork:
“What about me?”
or
“What does this moment require?”
One keeps you stuck in yourself.
The other builds someone you can trust…
even when you don’t feel like it.

The Smarter Way to Lose Fat
Most people think fat loss means one thing: eat less, exercise more, and hang on until willpower runs dry. That’s not a plan. That’s punishment.
Why People With “Slow Metabolisms” Gain Weight
Having a “slow metabolism” simply means your body runs on fewer calories.
